―ヒュームの「意図からの証明」批判についてー

序

神の存在問題はすぐれて信仰の問題である。しかし、哲学は古来からそれを思弁の対象とし、理論的証明を試みてきた。

それらの試みの成果はさておくとしても、少なくとも、神の存在は検証しがたい問題である故、かえってそれに関する議論は哲学的問題の本質を

最も純粋な形で顕わにするものであった、と言うことができよう。

ここでは、ヒュームの因果論の検討のため、それの宗教的議論への応用と考えられる『自然宗教に関する対話』（１）（以下『対話』と略記）を取り上げる。

この『対話』は、クレアンテス、フィロ、デメア、という三人の対話者によって交わされるもので、世界の合目的性から神の存在を導くという所謂「意図からの証明」

(Argument from Design)の検討を主題としている。『対話』では、クレアンテスがその証明を提唱し、フィロがその反駁を試みているわけだが、その際の主な論争点は、

「意図からの証明」が正当な因果推論であるか否か、であるように思われる。従って、『対話』は、宗教論としてもさることながら、ヒュームの因果論を理解する上でも

決して看過し得ない著作である。と言えるのである。もっとも、『対話』には正確な理解を妨げ難問がある。それは、三人の対話者の内誰がヒューム本人の代弁者であるのかが

形式の上からは判然としなく、従って他ならぬヒューム自身の見解が把握しがたい、ということである。しかし、「意図からの証明」に対するフィロの反駁ヒュームの因果論の

枠組みに基つ゛いていることが明らかである限り、フィロこそヒュームである、という想定が最も自然であり、ほぼ確実であろう。（２）それは、フィロの宗教上の懐疑の立場が

ヒュームの他の著作での宗教への態度と対応していることからも推測できることがある(E sectX & sectXI, N 95)。とは言え、もし仮に、フィロがヒュームである、という想定

が成り立たないとしても、フィロの議論の観点からヒュームの因果論を吟味することの哲学的意義が消失することはないはずである。

本稿は、以上のような視点から、『対話』の内の因果論に関わる部分に焦点を絞ったうえで、そこでのフィロによるヒューム的な因果批判の展開に注目し、ヒューム的な

因果の規則説(regularity theory)の再検討を試みるものである。それは同時に、因果の関係項(causal relata)に関する現代的議論への接近を通じ、ヒュームの因果論

に潜む可能性を探る試みでもある。

１、 不在性の支配

「過去はどこにもない」これは健全な理解の一つだろう。

過去は、現にいまそれ自体を見たり、ふれたりすることは

できない。過去は経験を超えているのである。あるいは、

そもそも文法的に、過去は不在であるというべきかもしれ

ない。不在でなければ、現在になってしまうからである。

このように、「過去の不在性」は動かし難い。しかし、だ

からといって、過去はまったくの否存在であり、世界の事

実ではない、という全面的な過去に関する懐疑論はおそら

く通用しない。その理由として、直ちに少なくとも二つの

論点を挙げることができる。まず第一に、私たちの言語に

はたくさんの過去含意表現が現実に含まれており、もし過

去は一切存在しないという懐疑論を主張したならば、かな

りの主張が足場を失う。「これは彼の作品です」、「この自

転車は錆びついている」といった日常的な表現を考えて

みよう。「作品である」という述語には、過去のいくつかの

時点でその作者が製作した、という過去の出来事が含意さ

れている。そうした過去の出来事との結びつきによって

誰々の作品という表現は意味をなしているのである。また、

「錆びついている」が、過去の時間経過のなかで徐々に進

行してきた酸化作用を含意していることは明らかである。

その含意を排除するなら「茶色である」とはいえても、

「錆びている」とはいえないはずである。第二に、過去に

対する現在とはそもそも何か、と考えることによっても過

去に関する懐疑論は説得力を失う。もし現在を点的な瞬間

と考えようとしたら、私たちの経験はほぼすべて過去的なも

のになり、よって過去が否存在であるという主張は、私た

ちの経験はそもそも不可能であるという自己破滅を招来す

ることになる。あるいは、もし現在を幅のあるものと捉え

るとするなら、過去が「過ぎ去ったいま」という形で幅の

ある現在に含意されていることになり、よって過去を否存

在とすることはやはり自己破滅とならざるをえない。「過

去がない」といま主張する言明も、それ自体が時間のなか

で生じる出来事である以上、真に過去がなかったら、自家

撞着のパラドックスに陥るしかない。かくて、二つの論点

のいずれに拠るにせよ、私たちの現在は確かに過去を含意

し、つまり過去に支配され、そのことで現在というリア

リティを確保していると、そうゆうべきであることが分か

る。「過去の含意性」、これもまた抜き難い真理である。

過去についての懐疑論ということでは、ラッセルがかつ

て提起した奇妙な仮定がしばしば引き合いに出される。
