理解（りかい）とは、物事の①理由、原因、意味を正しく知ることである。

認知心理学において研究対象とされ、②記憶や学習と密接な関係にあると考えられている。

理解には、段階がある。その段階は、下のほうのものになると具体的であり、上のほうのものになると抽象的である。

例として、文章理解について記す。

文章を理解するには、まず、書かれている文章の言語を理解できなくてはならない。英語なら英語、日本語なら日本語を、である。

次に、書かれている一つ一つの文章の意味を正しく理解できる必要もある。

最後に、文章全体の構造を把握することも必要である。物語ならばストーリー、取り扱い説明書ならば手順全体を把握するなどである。

さらに、取り扱い説明書では、実際にその手順を正しく行えるかどうかということが関係して来る。

語源（ごげん、英語：etymology）とは、ある語の元となる古い語や故事である。

語の意味、発音、表記は時と共にしばしば変わるため、語源がいつも明らかとは限らない。

ある語について、何に由来するのか、あるいはいつ借用されたのか、意味や形がどのように変化したのかを探る学問を、語源学という。

語源学は言語学の中では主要な分野ではなく、また一つ一つの語の由来を探ることは学問的に重視されていないが、その成果は言語の系統を調べる比較言語学で利用される。
