＜シンポジウム：哲学とはいかなる営みかーー「哲学」と「フィロソフィア」の間＞ 哲学の成立――古代ギリシアから現代日本に向けて 序、近代日本と「フィロソフィア」の出会い 西周は、オランダに向け１８６２年（文久二）年に出帆し た船中で一通の蘭文書簡を認め、「フィロソフィ、または、 ①愛知学（Philosophie of wijsbegeerte）と呼ばれる学問の領域 も、追求されなければならない」と自らの希望を記してい る。「これもまた、学ぶにとても困難に見えるが、私の考 えでは、それは我が国の開花に真に貢献するはずである」。 そこで言及される名は、②デカルト、ロック、ヘーゲル、カ ントという西洋近代の哲学者たちであるが、同時期に書か れた「ヒロソヒー講義草案」で、西は哲学のギリシア起源 を強調している。草案では、ピュタゴラスが初めて用いた 「ヒロソヒ」の語を「賢きことをすき好む」の意と説明し、 その語の継承者で、⑤ソフィストとの対抗で、「ヒロソフル」 を名乗った③ソクラテスを「希哲学の開基」とみなしている。 近代日本の「フィロソフィ」との出会いは、古典ギリシ アへの回帰という１９世紀西欧の志向を色濃く反映してい る。「儒学、理学」といった東洋の概念を敢えて避け、新た な知との出会いの意義を込めた西の訳語「希哲学」は、そ の④精神を受け継ぐ意図を表している。西は「希哲学」を 「神学、耶蘇教」との差異で語り他方で、③ソクラテスや プラトンらギリシア哲学者を孔子や孟子ら中国の聖賢と対 に扱っていく。西洋の「フィロソフィア」とのこの出会い は、「哲学」を根付かせる過程で、古代哲学を基礎として 重んじる日本の西洋哲学研究史に反映される。 現代日本に定着してきた「哲学」は、植民地化されるこ とのない自立した社会と文化において、東洋思想を基盤に 蘭学を先駆けけとして積み重ねられた貴重な遺産である。そ の意義と可能性は、西が④自由な精神おいて出会った西洋 文明の遡源、古代ギリシアという鏡から、くり返し見直さ れる必要がある。 本稿ではまず、古代ギリシアにおける哲学の成立を、三 つの観点から振り返る。「フィロソフォス」理念の誕生、 哲学の可能性をめぐる論争状況、そして、西洋に受け継が れた制度・伝統である。そこから、現代日本において私た ちが引き受けるべき「哲学」の役割を見定めていきたい。 １、「哲学者」（フィロソフォス）の誕生 （１）人間の生としての「哲学者」 ①「知を愛し求める者」を意味するギリシア語「フィロソフォス」 （philosophos）は、・・・・・「無知」過ぎる為に、以下省略 |
