使うときは）、中世哲学における理性による、神の存在の根拠の提示を意味する。神の存在は、緒事物の存在が自明であると同時に

、自明考えられていたが、トマス・アクィナスが『神学大全』において取った立場が示すように、神は、自然なる理性においても

その存在や超越的属性が論証可能な存在である。このように神の存在を、理性（推論）によって導出する手順が、「神の存在証明」

と呼ばれてる。神の存在証明は、古代から中世にかけての哲学的思索の中で、代表的には３つのものが知られ、これに、

３つの神の神の存在証明を全て論駆し否定したイマヌエル・カントが、彼自身の哲学の帰結として要請した「神の存在」の根拠が

加わって、４種類が存在する。

また、この４種類の存在証明は、いわば典型的な論証形式のパターン区別に当たり、他の様々な個別的な思想家が、

神の存在証明を試みてきた。

４種類の存在証明は、カントがなした分類に従って、通常、次のように言う。

１、 目的論的証明（自然神学的証明）世界が規則的かつ精巧なのは、神が世界を作ったからだ。

２、 本体論的証明（存在論的証明）「存在すると」いう属性を最大限に持ったものが神だ。

３、 宇宙論的証明：因果律に従って原因の原因の原因の、と遡って行くと根本原因があるはず。

この根本原因こそ神だ。

４、 度徳論的証明：道徳に従うと幸福になるのは神がいるからだ。　

前３者は、カントが『純粋理性批判』の第三章「純粋理性の理想」において中世以来の神の存在証明をその論駆のために

独自にまとめたものである。しかし、神の存在証明の分類としてよくまとまっているため説明の際にしばしば使用される。
