啓蒙思想時代の哲学者であり、またドイツ観念論哲学者の祖でもあり、そして近現代哲学に大きな影響力を持ち続けている哲学者、イマヌエル・カントは、哲学について次のように説明している。

古代ギリシャの哲学は、三通りの学に分かれていた。すなわちーー物理学、倫理学および論理学である。この区分は、哲学というものの本性にかんがみてごく適切であり、これに区分の原理を加えれば、かくべつ訂正すべき点はないと言ってよい。

現代思想において、特に分析哲学に多大な影響を及ぼした哲学者、ルートウ゛ィヒ・ウィトゲンシュタインは、哲学について次のように説明している。

概説　「編集」

古希　　　　　　　(philosophia、ピロソピアー、フィロソフィア)という語は、愛智「５」という意味である。

希：philein（愛する）と希：sophia（知恵、知、智）が結び合わさったものであるので、元来「philosophia」には「知を愛する」「智を愛する」という意味が込められている「６」「７」。

哲学という訳語は明治時代に西周が用いて一般的に用いられるようになった「６」「７」。（→＃語源とその意味）

「philosopia」というのは単に「愛知の学」という意味であり、それだけではまだ何を研究する学問であるかは示されていない「８」。

この語では内容が規定されていない「６」のである。哲学以外の学問の場合は一般に、（例えば「経済学」「生物学」などのように）名前を聞いただけでもおおよそ内容は察しがつく「８」。

ところが哲学の場合は、名前を聞いただけではそれが何を研究する学問なのか内容を理解できない「８」。これは哲学という学問の対象がけっして一定していないこと示しており「８」、

哲学はまさにその字義のとうり「知を愛する学」とでもいうほかに仕方ないような特徴を備えている「６」（→＃哲学の対象・主題）

このように対象によってこの学を規定することができないと、「対象を扱う＜＜方法＞＞に共通点があり、それによって規定できるのはないか」との期待が生まれることがあるか、

フィロソフィアという語　「編集」

古希：　　　　　　(philosophia、ピロソピアー、フィロソフィア)という語は、愛知「１０」という意味である。

ギリシア語において　　　　　（愛しい）の派生語　　　　（愛する）と　　　　（知恵、知、智）が結び合わさったものであるので、元来「philosophia」は「知を愛する」「智を愛する」という意味が

込められている「６」「７」。２０世紀の神学者ジャン・ルクレールによれば、古代ギリシアにおいてフィロソフィアとは認識のための理論や方法ではなくむしろ知恵・理性に従う生き方

を指して使われ、中世の修道院でもこの用法が存在した「１１」とされる。一方、中世初期のセビリャのイシドールスはその百科事典的な著作『語源誌』（羅：Etymologiae）において、

哲学とは「よく生きようとする努力と結合した人間的、神的事柄に関する認識である「１２」」と述べている。この語はヘラクレイトスやヘロドトスによって、形容詞や動詞の形でいくらか

使われていたが、名称として確立したのはソクラテスやプラトンが用いるようになってから「１３」、とされる。

哲学の対象・主題　「編集」

紀元前の古代ギリシアから現代に至るまでの西洋の哲学を眺めてみるだけでも、そこには一定の対象というものは存在していない「２０」

（他の地域・時代の哲学まで眺めるとなおさらである）。西洋の哲学を眺めるだけでも、それぞれの時代の哲学は、それぞれ異なった対象を選択し研究していた「２０」。

ソクラテス以前の初期ギリシア哲学では、対象は（現在の意味とは異なっている自然ではあるが）「自然」であった紀元前５世紀頃のソクラテスは、＜不知の知＞の自覚を強調した「２１」。

その弟子のプラトンや孫弟子のアリストテレスにになると、人間的な事象と自然を対象とし、壮大な体系を樹立した。

ヘレニズム・ローマ時代の哲学では、ストア派やエビクロス派など、「自己の安心立命を求める方法」という身近で実践的な問題が中心となった「２０」（ヘレニズム哲学は哲学の範囲を倫理学

に限定しようとしたとしばしば誤解されるが、ストア派やエピクロス派でも自然学や論理学、認識論といった様々な分野が研究されていた「２２」。

平俗な言葉で倫理的主題を扱った印象の強い後期ストア派でも、セネカが『自然研究』を著している。

ヨーロッパ中世では、哲学の対象は自然でも人間でもなく「神」であった「２０」（といわれることが多いが、カッシオドルスのように専ら医学・自然学を哲学とみなした例もある「２３」し、

ヒッポのアウグスティヌスからオッカムのウィリアムに至る中世哲学者の多くは言葉を対象とした哲学的考察に熱心に取り組んだ「２４」。また中世の中頃以降は大学のカリキュラムとの関係で

「哲学」が自由七科を指す言葉となり、神学はこの意味での哲学を基盤として学ばれるものであった「２５」。

さらに時代が下り近代になると、人間が中心的になり、自己に自信を持った時代であったので、、「人間による認識」（人間は何をどの範囲において認識できるのか）ということの探究が

最重要視された「２０」。「人間は理性的認識により真理を把握しうる」とする合理論者と、「人間は経験を超えた事柄については認識できない」とする経験論者が対立した「２０」。

カントはこれら合理論と経験論を総合統一しようとした「２０」。

１９世紀、２０世紀ごろのニーチェ、ベルクソン、デルタイらは、いわゆる「生の哲学」を探求し、「非合理な生」を哲学の対象とした「２０」。キルケゴール、ヤスバース、ハイデガー、サルトルらの

実在主義「注１０」は、「人間がいかに自らの自由により自らの生き方を決断してゆくか」ということを中心的課題に据えた「２０」。

このように哲学には決して一定の対象というものは存在しなく、対象によって規定できる学問ではなく、冒頭で述べたように、ただ「philosophy」「愛知の学」とでも呼ぶしかない「２０」とされている。

学問としての哲学で扱われる主題には、真理、本質、同一性、普遍性、数学的命題、論理、言語、知識、観念、行為、経験、世界、空間、時間、歴史、現象、人間一般、理性、存在、自由、因果性、

世界の起源のような根源的な原因、正義、善、美、意識、精神、自我、他我、神、霊魂、色彩などがある。一般に、哲学の主題は抽象度が高い概念であることが多い。

これらの主題について論じられる事柄としては、定義「注１１」、性質「注１２」、複数の立場・見解の間の整理「注１３」などがある。これをひとくくりに「存在論」と呼ぶことがある。

地球や人間、物質などが「ある」ということについて考える分野である。

また、「高貴な生き方とは存在するのか、また、あるとしたらそれはどのようなものなのか」「善とは永遠と関連があるものなのか」といった問いの答えを模索する営みとして、

旧来の神学や科学的な知識・実験では論理的な解答を得られない問題を扱うものであるとも言える「注４」。またこのようなテーマは法哲学の現場に即しておらず、

真偽が検証不可能であり、実証主義の観点からナンセンスな問いであると考える立場もある（例えば論理実証主義）。こちらはひとくくりに「価値論」と呼ぶことがある。

「よい」ということはどうゆうことなのか、何がよりよいのかを考える分野である。

このような意味での哲学はより具体的にはとりわけ古代ギリシアのギリシア哲学、中世のスコラ哲学、ヨーロッパの諸哲学（イギリス経験論、ドイツ観念論など）

などをひとつの流れとみてそこに含まれる主題、著作、哲学者などを特に研究の対象とする学問とされることも多い。（哲学一般から区別する場合にはこれを特に西洋哲学と呼ぶことがある。

また緒学問の扱う主題について特にこうした思考を用いて研究する分野は哲学の名を付けて呼ぶことが多い。例えば、歴史についてその定義や性質を論じるものは「歴史哲学」と呼ばれ、

言語の定義や性質について論じるものは「言語哲学」と呼ばれる。これらは哲学の一分野であると同時にそれら緒学の一部門でもあると考えられることが多い。
